There are a great many actors that, in The Score’s opinion at least, deserve many more leading roles. Somewhere near the top of that list would be Don Cheadle who, despite many a sparkling supporting role and a couple of stunning leads (Hotel Rwanda and the hugely underrated Reign Over Me), doesn’t seem to have captured the imaginations of Hollywood’s casting directors.
Thankfully, someone’s seen sense and cast him as the lead in the new action-expionage-twisty-plotty-thrill-a-thon, Traitor. Cheadle plays a shadowy ex-Special Forces soldier that may, or may not (or may HAVE, or may NOT, or… well, you get the idea) have jumped under the duvet with the enemy.
Lots of chasing, blowing up, emoting and barely concealed rage seem to be the order of the day, with a side-order of Acting, due not only to Cheadle’s magnificence but also the presence of the always reliable Guy Pearce and the deadpan, hang-dog greatness of Jeff Daniels. See for yourself; Apple has the trailer HERE.
Of course, we’ve seen these kind of thrillers a hundred times before, but when they’re cast and shot right, they can be really, really special (the Bourne movies, for instance, or the recent triumph that was Vantage Point) in an old-school “wasn’t that exciting” kind of way.
We have very high hopes for this. But what do you think? Can Cheadle pull off this kind of role? Let us know your opinion on our forum. We promise not to ban anyone that doesn’t like Cheadle. Honest.
