The LA Times are reporting that a 16-story development which is set to contain “93 condominiums, 13,442 square feet of commercial and office space and a 242-space underground parking lot next to the landmark, 13-floor, record-shaped building” could damage the world renowned echo chambers contained in the underground of the Capitol Records building.
The Marina Del Ray developer has faced strong opposition from Capitol executives who
insist that such a development could significantly damage the eight concrete chambers, built 30 feet underground and 18 feet from the proposed development.
Although a senior vice president at Capitol, Maureen B. Schultz insists that the “viability of being able to run Capitol Studios” has been called into question, a lawyer representing the development stated that they were confident that the project would not cause any long term damage. He then went on to say that “they have a right to be concerned, but their concerns are exaggerated.”
The echo chambers were designed by legendary jazz guitarist Les Paul, also known as a popular musical instrument.
This could certainly turn out to be very negative for the music world if Capitol’s claims are true. Musicians the world over insist that digital reverb cannot replicate the unique properties of Capitol’s natural echo chambers.
