Well, Marvel are terribly chuffed at the moment. Iron Man is doing unreasonably well at the box office ($197.6 million so far, $98.6 million of that in the US according to Empire - not bad for a film with a $150 million budget) clocking in at number 10 in the ‘all time highest openings’ category. Not bad going, shell-head.
With this in mind, it probably won’t surprise you too much to learn that a number of other projects, some long-rumoured, have been green-lit on the back of Favreau’s franchise-starter. The complete list is as follows:
Iron Man 2 - 30 April 2010
Thor - 4 June 2010
Captain America - 6 May 2011
The Avengers - July 2011
Add these to the already finished or in-production Marvel films headed our way (The Incredible Hulk, Wolverine and Ant-Man) and it seems that we’ll be inundated with comic-book heroics over the next few years. We reckon that’s no bad thing if Marvel can consistently achieve the quality of Iron Man. Don’t be at all surprised if that list grows too. We’d put our money on some more web-slinging action…
