Yes, you guessed it, some anonymous suit somewhere in Hollywoodland has decided that Donnie Darko – one of the finest films of the last decade and a complete, finished story in its own right – needs a sequel.

Personally, we think this is the worst idea since Hitler thought it might be nice to visit Russia.

For what it’s worth, it’s going to be called S.Darko (’S’ for ’stupidly pointless hatchet job’ or ’senselessly idiotic remake’, we presume) and is set seven years after the first film. Donnie’s sister, Samantha (oh, that’s what the ‘S’ is for), and her friend Corey are now 18 and travelling to Los Angeles; during which journey they experience oddness. We’re betting that a fluffy-yet-demonic visionary beastie of some sort or other is involved (apparently, there are meteorites and rabbits (SURPRISE!)).

Unsurprisingly, Richard Kelly is in no way attached or involved with what will, we confidently predict, turn out to be a pointless shambles of epic proportions. Donnie was unique, you can’t capture lightning in a bottle, folks.

We can’t remember the last time we cared less about a new film (maybe Meet The Spartans… maybe), but if you really want all the news on this debacle in the making, visit screendaily.com.

The original cut of Donnie Darko is really great. The Director’s Cut strangely made it feel smaller with its flaws more apparent. I always thought of it as a John Hughes film seen through David Lynch or something close to that. The scenes in the suburbs were filmed in Chicago, in the same suburbs where Ferris Bueller took place.

It was never a sequel film to begin with and this is a fairly idiotic move.
It’s not like this is a big name franchise. It was a smallish cult affair for a time and I wouldn’t think that this sequel would have big dollaroos written all over it.

Yeah, the original cut is the best. This sequel is a terrible idea. When will they learn!?
Anyone seen Southland tales? I’ve heard it’s a load of old bananas.

Southland Tales is either one of the worst or greatest films I’ve ever seen. I honestly can’t decide which…
