Raphael Saadiq, formerly of Tony! Toni! Tone! and Lucy Pearl, and more recently all on his lonesome, because, possibly, he has a little bit of an ego, has a new album coming out.
It’s sounding like he’s gonna try and ride the Amy Winehouse/Mark Ronson retro train, which is fair enough, as TTT’s House of Music probably did it first. He’s using 60s style recording processes, has Stevie Wonder on harmonica, and is generally aiming to capture some magic and hopefully really nail a solo album, after some mixed success with his first few. The Score’s fingers are certainly crossed.
As a quick reminder, here’s a couple of choice cuts from the Raphael Saadiq vaults…
(Raphael Saadiq, “Still Ray”)
(Tony Toni Tone featuring DJ Quik, “Let’s Get Down”)
