Sydney Pollack, the Oscar-winning director, producer and actor, has died of cancer. He was 73.

Throughout his career, he worked with some of Hollywood’s finest; Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Robert Mitchum, Al Pacino, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn.

While he had recently worked almost exclusively as a producer and director, he was always keen to take small acting roles - and always gave excellent performances. His final film was last year’s Oscar-nominated Michael Clayton.

A solid performer and, as a producer, the champion of many titles that otherwise may not have made it to our screens, Pollack will be sadly missed.
